You should not compare yourself to anyone else: Irrfan Khan
Friday 27 May 2016 | 4:36 AM | By

Irrfan Khan is riding high on the success of his past films, he is one actor who is carving his niche in Hollywood also. The actor chats about his upcoming film Madaari, the difference he finds in the approach of Hollywood and how he is not an insecure actor.

What gave you the conviction to be a part of Madaari?

It was initially me, Shailaja and Sutapa were discussing ideas. Shailaja discussed this, which was a true story, and then we forgot about it. The story stayed with us and then we started discussing that do we have a film inside this. Then we called Ritesh who wrote the screenplay then we could see that there’s a very interesting film in it. But it is not a regular conventional film although it has a narrative that is massy.

It's looks like you are very choosy and picky about the films that are offered to you?

I am picky and choosy and I am not insecure the way my life is shaping up and I have no doubts about it. I am not insecure that I am being considered like that or like that person because I learnt this lesson very early in my career, everybody has their peculiar way of exploring themselves and you should not compare yourself to anyone else. You have your own identity. I want to concentrate on that, what is my connection with the audience and what they expect from me and what is that I as an actor and human being have special in me.

What attracts him to Hollywood?

They demand and challenge you to bring nuances, which our industry can do without. You can play in a much more regular way here and still get away with it. There you have to dig deep and that’s why they like about the performance. You have put yourself on the line of fire. When I was doing Life of Pi there were so many things that I didn’t have a command over, that gives you a chance to expand yourself as a human being.

What does Bollywood lack?

Bollywood lacks enterprising producers who can just understand the market that is demanding and you are not able to cope. There is a ripe audience that is demanding and begging to give them entertainment and you have not been able to see what they are looking for and that’s why they are moving towards Hollywood. That’s why when two films release the news comes that Hollywood film has got a bigger opening. We need producers who can identity talent, who can put talent together and take the risk.

Why dont you go for award functions?

I don’t have a need to be seen, I was forced by my well wishers and I tried that but its so boring. You go in award they are so boring that you want to hit your head on the wall. Awards pe zang lag jaata hai aur unko phekna padta hai. They don’t even have your name on it. The value is of 5 tweets or one night. It doesn’t add anything to you. I don’t know the art of networking, if I would have known I would have done that but I don’t have any space to cultivate that and its not my need now. I trust that things happen to you.
