Dharma Productions, run by Karan Johar, is working on a film on Usha Mehta, a freedom warrior. The film will be directed by Kannan Iyer, who is also co-writing the script with Darab Farooqui. It is based on Amatya Goradia and Pritesh Sodha's play Khar Khar. However, Ketan Mehta, a National Award-winning director, is also working on a film on his aunt Usha Mehta.
“Ketan Mehta is well-versed in Usha Mehta's life and wants to create a film to honor his aunt. According to sources, he is presently working on the screenplay and will make casting and filming schedule decisions soon. Ketan Mehta has directed a number of biographical films in the past, including Aamir Khan's Mangal Pandey: The Rising, Nawazuddin Siddiqui's Manjhi – The Mountain Man, and Paresh Rawal's Sardar, which won the National Award for Best Film On National Integration.
Usha Mehta is well known for founding Congress Radio, a clandestine radio station that broadcast during the Quit India Movement. She has also been awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor. Toba Tek Singh, Ketan Mehta's most recent film, was released in 2018. Pankaj Kapur and Vinay Pathak had important parts in the film, which was purportedly based on Saadat Hassan Manto's short tale of the same name.
